FAQs Grand Pianos & Upright Pianos

Did you know that it takes a full year before a Steinway grand piano leaves our factories in Hamburg and New York — and that it is composed of more than 12,000 parts? Experienced, long-tenured craftsmen continually refine the Steinway grand so that choosing one remains the best possible decision. Every unique instrument embodies carefully selected woods, the finest materials, eighty-percent pure craftsmanship, precision work to 0.1 millimeters, and above all: a love of music.

Steinway & Sons has exclusively used naturally grown solid wood in grand piano construction from the company’s founding. The utmost care is taken during processing to ensure a consistent grain pattern, in order to guarantee optimal vibrational behavior.

Steinway & Sons uses exclusively wood joints within the grand piano case, as metal connections such as screws or bolts would interrupt the flow of vibration.

The finest example of the consistent application of the vibration-optimization principle! The grand piano case is constructed of hardwood (maple and mahogany) with a horizontal grain pattern, which guarantees an optimal transmission of vibration. Up to 20 layers of wood are pressed together in a single operation for both the inner and outer case. The closure of the case creates an enclosed sound body that provides the necessary support for the highly flexible Steinway soundboard.

The design of the Steinway soundboard incorporates all the essential principles of acoustics. The special tapering of the end areas achieves the greatest possible flexibility. The result is a maximum range of dynamic expression. Furthermore, the characteristically pre-formed crown serves as the guarantee of stability and longevity.

Steinway & Sons has been uncompromisingly committed from its founding to fulfilling three criteria: design, materials, and the proportion of handcrafted work in the manufacturing process. From this commitment, the exclusive Steinway System was born. Regardless of which instrument you acquire from Steinway & Sons — you can be certain that every model, from an upright to a concert grand, is crafted according to the exacting standards of the Steinway System. This is why we can guarantee that you will always receive only one level of quality: Steinway quality.
